Bodega Otronia 45 Rugientes – Exceptional Patagonian White Wine Blend

Bodega Otronia's vineyards are extremely unique for an abundance of reasons. The diverse soils, permanent winds, cold and dry climate, and extreme sunlight intensity, give a singular profile to these wines.  In addition to nets, thousands of trees have been planted around the vineyard to help shelter the vines from battering gales. Proving that fortune favours the brave, the merciless conditions give rise to elegant wines with distinct vibrancy, aromatic intensity and a very unique sense of place. The
name `45 Rugientes` refers to the 45° latitude, and `rugientes` translates to 'roaring winds.'

35% Chardonnay
30% Gewürztraminer
20% Pinot Gris
15% Riesling

The 2021 harvest saw the largest production in the 11 years since planting, despite some intense climactic conditions. A frost in October saw temperatures reaching -7°C, luckily, the buds were not seriously affected. Harvest took place in mid-March with fruit showing excellent freshness and aromatic intensity.

Tasting Notes

Notes of tropical fruits, citrus peel and jasmine are combined with floral aromas. The palate shows an exuberant freshness complimented by a delicate minerality and excellent acidity.

Vineyard & Winemaking

Origin: Sarmiento, Chubut, Argentina
Climate: One of the coldest and most remote vineyards in the world, where strong winds and extreme temperatures result in low yields and exceptional fruit purity.
Soil: A mix of limestone, clay, and gravel, adding depth and minerality to the wine.
Vinification: On arrival at the winery, the grapes were directly pressed and racked. Each of the varieties were then fermented separately in stainless steel and concrete eggs. Once blended, the wine was aged in French oak barrels and concrete vats for 20 months prior to bottling.

Food Pairing

This elegant Patagonian white blend pairs beautifully with seafood dishes such as grilled prawns, scallops, and lemon-butter salmon. It also complements light pastas, Asian cuisine, and soft cheeses like Brie or goat cheese. Its vibrant acidity and floral notes make it a perfect match for fresh salads and delicately spiced dishes.

The Spirit of Patagonia

Otronia wines capture the wild, untamed essence of Patagonia, where nature dictates the rhythm of viticulture. This 2021 vintage is an exceptional representation of the region’s ability to produce world-class white wines elegant, expressive, and full of character.

Otronia

Extreme winemaking best describes Alejandro Bulgheroni’s ambition to produce world-class, cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Patagonia’s far south. Otronia is located at 45.33° S in the province of Chubut, the most southerly winemaking region in
the world. The vines are planted on the shore of Lake Musters, once called Otron by the region’s native inhabitants. The environment is incredibly hostile, with very little rainfall, bitterly cold temperatures, year-round frost risk and blusterous winds of up to 110km/hr, all providing extremely challenging conditions for viticulture. In 2023 Otronia was awarded `First Growth` status in Tim Atkin MW's Special Argentina Report, a remarkable feat considering the relative infancy of the project.
